CIVIL ASSET FORFEITURE - SB2

Overview:  An individual must be convicted of or plead guilty to a crime before law enforcement could take ownership of personal property through the civil asset forfeiture process.   Seized personal property would be returned if a person is not convicted of a crime.

CYBER BULLYING - HB 5017, 5018

Overview: Overview: Cyber bullying is now  clearly defined and is considered a crime in Michigan.  Those accused of cyber bullying can be charged with misdemeanors or felonies depending on the severity of the cyber bullying.

CHILD ABUSE - SB 29 and 30

Overview: Stricter punishments for repeat child abusers becomes law.

Summary:  SB 29 -   Crimes; penalties; penalties for third degree and fourth degree child abuse

Summary: SB 30 - Criminal procedure; sentencing guidelines; sentencing guidelines for crimes of third degree and fourth degree child abuse

RAISE THE AGE - SB 90, 100, AND 101

Overview: 17-year-olds will  no longer be automatically treated as adults in Michigan's criminal justice system

MANDATORY REPORTING FOR FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS - SB 464 AND 465

Overview: Protecting our seniors and vulnerables from losing their financial security.

SB 464
Summary: Financial institutions; generally; financial exploitation prevention act; create. Creates new act. 

SB 465   Summary: Human services; county services; restriction on adult protective services from informing financial institutions of investigatory status following financial institution's elder abuse report; eliminate.
