Statement of Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office Candidate Peter J. Lucido about the Findings of the Michigan Department of State’s Review of Allegations by Political Operative Mark Brewer
I am pleased that the Michigan Department of State’s (MDS) has firmly rejected the frivolous allegations of my campaign opponent’s major supporter, Mark Brewer, who falsely claimed that I violated the Michigan Campaign Finance Act. Among other findings, the MDS concluded, “…no evidence was provided that suggests that county employees were conducting campaign activities while working on county time.”
From the beginning, this entire matter was nothing more than a desperate attempt by Mr. Brewer to weaponize the State’s campaign finance regulations for generating negative media coverage about my re-election campaign.
I have asked my personal attorney to clarify a statement in the MDS’ letter that pertains to a county employee (not myself) who on one occasion (several years ago when I was not running for office) accidentally, and unknowingly, sent out an electronic newsletter for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office that included one image with a non-visible link to my campaign web site.
The MDS found no evidence that this communication was deliberately used for campaign purposes, but apparently the department wants more information about this matter which I am glad to provide. I am confident we will be able to provide the information necessary to reach a full and final resolution of this matter.
It is disappointing that Mr. Brewer has forced me to defend my reputation against these baseless political smears. This is a classic example of the campaign tactic of lawfare which uses judicial and investigative proceedings for political purposes.
I remain, however, extremely proud of the fact that my leadership during the last four years has restored integrity and award-winning high achievements to the previous most corruptly run County Prosecutor’s Office in Michigan.
I will not allow the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office to be poorly managed like it was when the political ally of Mr. Brewer and my campaign opponent was in charge.
And I also will not permit Mr. Brewer or my campaign opponent to distract me from the job I love which is protecting the citizens of Macomb County and fighting for justice.
It is my hope that the citizens of Macomb County will support my reelection based on my record of success, and plan to keep building a safer, more inclusive and more judicially fair community. Working together, we will not go backwards in Macomb County again.
